Thomas W. spends his working life in the part most people never look at — not the systems, but the gaps between them, the seam where two systems never built to talk to each other are wired together anyway — and where both the value and the trouble live.

He's from Manchester, and it's hard to picture a better town to have made him. Manchester is the original junction city: it joined itself to the world by canal, then built the world's first inter-city railway, then wired itself up all over again — a place that made its whole character out of connecting things that weren't designed to be connected. The ship canal brought the sea to a city that isn't on the coast. That instinct — for the connection nobody thought to build until someone had to — is more or less his whole trade.

He came up as an integration hand, the person you call when two systems have to talk and nobody quite knows how. He's connected estates nobody ever meant to be connected, done the migrations and the middleware, and heard "just make these two talk" more times than he can count. What that taught him is mostly about seams. He's watched point-to-point wiring work beautifully for two systems, then a third, and then quietly turn into spaghetti the day the fourth arrived — no one's mistake, just one reasonable shortcut stacked on the last. He's chased a failure into the gap between two systems both working exactly as designed — a failure that lived in neither, where a date format and an empty field meant two different things and no one's name was on the join. And he's moved data cleanly between two systems that passed every record and still meant different things by the word "customer" — which is when he learned that moving data and agreeing on it are not the same job.

So his creed is unfashionably plain. A good integration is boring on purpose; the clever, one-of-a-kind connection is usually the one nobody but its author can maintain, and its author always leaves. Standards and data contracts aren't red tape — they're the shared reference pitch that lets independent systems play together instead of drifting into noise. And the seam is not a detail to smooth over; it's the whole job, which is why he'll never call anything "seamless."

You can hear all of this in what he does with his evenings, because it's the same idea three times over. He plays in a brass band — dozens of independent parts, each written in its own key and range, made to interoperate into one piece of music, and every one of them tuned to the same reference pitch first, or the whole thing is just loud. A few questions for Thomas

Thomas, you drop words like "mint" and "sound" — what are we dealing with?

Manchester, that. "Mint" means great — a mint bit of design, an integration that just works. "Sound" is my highest praise for a system: reliable, does what it says, you don't have to think about it. "Our kid" is anyone I'm fond of, and if I say something went "dead well" I only mean it went really well. None of it's complicated. It's just where I'm from.

Why a brass band, of all things?

Because it's the best picture of interoperability I know. A band is dozens of independent parts — cornets, horns, the big bass at the back — each written in its own key and range, and the whole point is that they interoperate into one piece of music. But here's the first thing every player learns: everyone tunes to the same reference pitch before you play a note. Get that right and it's glorious. Skip it and it doesn't matter how good the parts are — it's just noise. That's a data contract, more or less.

And the narrowboat?

The canals round here are integration infrastructure you can actually stand on. A canal joins waterways sitting at different levels, and it does it with locks — you move between systems one careful, deliberate step at a time, and you can't rush a lock without making a mess. Manchester made its fortune connecting things by water before it did it by rail or wire. I find it dead calming to spend a weekend doing slowly, by hand, the thing I spend my week doing in software.

You collect languages?

A bit, and I do some amateur translation for the love of it. It's the same job as the day job, honestly. Two languages each think their own way of saying things is the obvious, standard one, and translation is the patient work in the middle of getting them to mean the same thing to each other. Swap "language" for "system" and you've got interoperability. Everyone thinks their dialect is the standard. Nobody's is.

You keep saying "the seam," and you flinch at "seamless." Explain?

The seam is the join — the space where one system hands off to the other. It's where all the value is, because a connected estate is worth more than the sum of its parts, and it's also where every failure hides, because the seam is the one bit of the whole picture that no single team has its name on. So when a vendor promises me "seamless," I get twitchy. The seam is the entire job. A thing with no seam is a thing nobody's looking after.

Where does your work stop and Sophia's start?

Ah, that's our running argument. Sophia designs the Azure platform; I connect it to everything that isn't it. On paper there's a clean line between her architecture and my integration, and in practice we redraw it on every single project, both of us reaching for a bit more of the middle. It's not a turf war — it's two people who both know the seam is where things break, so we both want a hand on it.

Who else do you lean on?

Elias and Ryan, mostly. I can wire two systems together in a week — that's the easy part. Getting them to agree on what "customer" actually means, so the data you're moving isn't quietly wrong, that's Elias's fight over on master data, and I genuinely can't finish without him. And Ryan and I meet in the pipeline: I build the feed, he watches it, and when it goes quiet at two in the morning, it's both our phones going off. Integration's never a solo.
